Evolution Education in Matric Life Sciences

"Evolution by Natural Selection" is one of four major components of the Matric Life Sciences curriculum in South Africa, counting towards the bulk of the marks for the Paper 2 exam. Yet it is also a super tricky part of the curriculum, and both learners and educators struggle with it.

In both my post doctoral research, and through various outreach activities, I have tried to understand what is needed. Luckily for me, in one workshop, educators spoke directly: they need/want worksheets. Worksheets do not require fancy technology, are interactive and take a huge preparation burden off the teacher.

I have since worked to try to put things together that cover the main concepts in the curriculum, that are interactive, that are easy to reproduce, edit and print and will also help learners understand evolution (and, of course, get good marks in the exam).

If you are an educator, feel free to download or modify the workbook below, which is composed of the following four worksheets:

  1. What is Evolution?

  2. Evidences of Evolution

  3. Artificial Selection

  4. Speciation

If you are a learner: feel free to use these to help you and your friends!

If you are an educator (or work with educators) of another curriculum that covers evolution, or even if you just want to teach something cool, please feel free to download and modify the workbook to better suit your needs.

If you are willing to translate (or to help sponsor the translation) of this workbook into any of the other official South African languages, or are able to print these workbooks for schools around South Africa, please feel free to get hold of me!
